Using Animated GIFs in Visualization

Chris Lysy shared a great simple post today about animating charts and embedding them as GIFs (which can be done in websites, presentations, emails...) to help explain a data story.

While some purposeful use of color and a clear title are also perfectly wonderful ways to make sure your graph speaks for itself, there's something entrancing and engaging about an animated chart that makes it feel like the designer (or analyst) is right there pointing you to what you need to think about.

As he demonstrates in his examples, these micro-animations are also great ways to highlight where you've achieved a target, or pose a question about a big change in a trend.

Check out the post here to see the animations in action.
